Hi Natalie - I love the dilemma of names.
My middle name is Margaret a family name but always shortened to Meg. I don't use it often as I feel it's a bit dated.
We have a tradition in our family that the boys have their mothers maiden name as a middle name my fathers is Kirkham and my son's is Bradley. Both my nephews also have Bradley as a middle name too which is nice as there is only me and my sister so our name carries on a bit longer.
If I'd had a daughter her middle name would have been part of my mothers maiden name as it would have been suitable, Carroll.
My grandfather was Joseph Arthur, Joseph being a family name but he was always known as Arthur and always signed his name J. Arthur which had a nice ring.
I worked in a sheltered housing scheme for a while and i was surprised at how many people born early last century use their middle names as their 'first' name.
And of course the other thing is sometimes the first and middle name and even the surname don't always 'flow' properly so their given name can be names that 'flow ' nicely even though they are known by their second name - eg my friends daughter is Hannah Verona (family name- but she is known as Ronni, short for Verona) because Verona Hannah didn't flow.

It's best not to choose a name too near the top of the list as this may 'date' your child in the future for example Joan's tend to be in their 70's and 80's Sharon's and Tracey's in their 40's Linda's and Susan's in their 50's, Michelle's in their 30's etc.
