I'm the daughter and niece of gambling addicts. I've seen the devastation it causes.

If I were in charge I'd ban all advertising for internet gambling and limit the number of bookies. Also make it illegal to have accounts. Place your bets with hard cash....
The more you bet the more you lose, unless you are a bookie of course.
clearly benefits are too generous.

That thought did cross my mind too TTT, but I don't think it's as simple as that. Maybe some families are pushed into claiming benefits by gambling.
In case anyone judges my dad or uncle...they always worked and gambled their own money and paid off their debts with their own money...

Just felt the need to say that :-(
I worked in Ladbrokes several years ago both in Twickenham area and south east London; doesn't suprise me even remotely. Not happy places to work.
I think it comes down to chasing a dream and then becomes an addiction which can be the worst of all, there's no end to how much debt people can get into with gambling.

I too have first hand experience of living with a gambling addict (dad) and it's really not nice, Christmases were 'on a wing and a prayer', high days were fantastic, low not so much.

As a result I can't even enjoy a night at the dogs, or put a bet on when we've been to Ascot, I just don't see the fun in it.
I once bumped into an aquaintance in a shopping centre, he was spending like there was no tomorrow. Why ? because he had won a wedge on the geegees. He was buying stuff he didn't need with money he had temporarily reclaimed from the bookie, so that he could get back to being broke again I guess. There is no rationality to be found amongst gamblers.
typical r1 gets his dig in about benefits, well i lived in what most would class as one of the poorest areas but just like my parents i was always in work

did have a problem for a couple of years with a one arm bandit in the club but it was the money that i earned from work r1
The rich do all their gambling on the Stock Exchange and other high-value speculations (e.g.property).

But that's OK of course, above reproach (even when they go too far and the taxpayer has to bail them out).

It's the rich wot get the pleasure, and the poor wot get the blame.
It's the same the whole world over, ain't it all a bloomin' shame.
all life is a gamble Canary it's just that some odds are longer than others and some approach infinity..
