As he wouldn't really be able to do it, it must be trickery. Perhaps all the people there were in on it. They were in the deeper water and there was a ridge just below the water line a few feet wide on which he was able to walk across. Of course he did not literally "walk on water", obviously. Or are there those that really really were taken in thinking he did?!
