when someone has a stroke is there driving licence automatically taken off them for a period of time of can they get straight back behing the wheel ??? it was bad enough for the person to be walking with a frame for a while but im concerned they shouldnt be behind a wheel of a car as its only been a matter of weeks !!
no, they are obliged to notify the DVLA, and won't be allowed to drive until they have taken a specialised driving test to check their mental and physical response times, and physical ability.
their insurance probably won't cover them until then either..
A relative of mine suffered quite a severe stroke, but with physiotherapy and lots of care back at home, he recovered enough to apply for his disabled licence after a year. He took a new test of some sort, and is now back behind the wheel of his modified care. However, a lady I know also had a slight stroke, and she was driving again within a few weeks. I'd think it was up to the the doctor or the hospital specialist as to when a person was deemed fit enough to get behind the wheel again.
