The Zoo is acting irresponsibly by encouraging people to pet the Lions.

Even a small moggie can inflict painful bites when they are annoyed with us. A Lion in a bad mood is going to be a tad more lethal when it lashes out.

I wonder what other 'experiences' they offer? - swim with the sharks, wrestle the grizzly, and cuddle the tiger perhaps.

Most likely explanation is they forgot to give the lion it's massive dose of tranquiliser that morning.
