I'm afraid you are wrong, baitress.
Summa c?u?m laude means with maximum praise.
c?u?m means with
laude means praise
summa is an adjective meaning highest .
I have no idea what the latin for treatise is, but it ain't summa
ladyalex.
my copy of the New Shorter Oxford Dictionary gives the definition of
SUMMA plural SUMMAE(noun and adverb)
1. A Treatise
2. A Manual
3. A compendium of knowledge
4. a degree summa *** laude
Sorry baitress, I had never heard of summa=treatise before.
I had always understood it to be part of the latin phrase 'summa c/u/m laude'.
I thought that degrees/dissertations etc were awarded in ascending order on the basis of their being
c/u/m laude = with praise
magna c/u/m laude =with great praise
then
summa c/u/m laude =with the highest praise.
