Some great answers/songs, I think this is the most rewarding thread I've posted so far.
Here is one last one from me from the late great Kirsty MacColl.

Goodbye to love - Karen Carpenter
Too Lost In You by The Sugababes.
In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins.

This was played at my Dad's funeral. Still brings a tear to my ear and a lump to my throat.
Wow, tigersam258 - a rather bitter song to be played at a funeral?

jomifl, Goodbye to Love was The Carpenters, by the way.
If loving you is wrong by Rod Stewart.
If You're Looking For A Way Out- Odyssey
Almost forgot this one.
Stronger by the Sugababes.
As it seems pieces of music rather than just songs are allowed, I will second Ric,ror's choice of the Elgar 'Cello Concerto (and yes, it must be Du Pré - the earlier one with Beecham) and how about Nimrod from the Enigma Variations, and for purely personal reasons, the Adagio from Khachaturian's Spartacus. I am starting to blub as I write!
Lots of answers so apologies if this one has already been done. I think this is one of the saddest songs ever written.

Oh Chinadoll, that song is so beautiful
This one makes me 'happy-sad'... My dad used to put his earfones on my head when I was depressed (a while back) and wouldn't talk.

everybody hurts - REM
also "they can't take that away from me" Even tho it's a fairly jolly song, the context of me hearing it at a memorial service
