The tungsten filament is so hot that it slowly vaporises. The quartz glass envelope also gets very hot and is designed to evaporate tungsten at the same speed it is deposited.

When halogen lights are run either above or below the correct voltage the inside of the glass becomes clouded with metal deposits.
