Why should it be respected? What right does religion have to say that people aren't free to marry whomsoever they choose? People can believe as they want to believe, but that doesn't give them the right to demand that others respect those beliefs, and neither does it give them the right to impose those beliefs on others. Religion does not hold a monopoly on marriage - thank goodness!
