Dream of Fair to Middling Women (1932)
Follows the adventures of the hapless Belacqua as he navigates romance, friends, alcohol and a demanding shiftless lifestyle. Beckett's first novel that is so Joyecean it features snippets of 5 languages and renders the story line nearly incomprehensible due to its impressionistic style and incessant wordplay. Yet it does start out with Belacqua masturbating to the thought of his girlfriend while sitting on a pier - an original beginning at least.
